To celebrate Earth Day Week-end, we would like to landscape our community’s front entrance. We are planning on doing it on Saturday April 25th. We are currently discussing the way to raise the funds. We also need volunteers! Here is a draft of a possible design. Please leave your opinion, ideas and if you are willing to help by commenting in this post.
I am almost positive I can get cost price of the plant material. The picture posted would cost somewhere between $200 and $300. That is for one side only. Double it for both sides.
ReplyDeletePlants on the design:
ReplyDeleteMiscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light' (Maiden Grass)
Sedum spectabile 'Autumn Joy'
Nandina domestica 'Fire Power'
Liriope muscari 'Big Blue' (Lily Turf)
Juniperus horizontalis 'Mother Lode' (Golden Rug Juniper)
Looks great! When are you coming to do my yard?
ReplyDeleteLooks really good, we appreciate all of your hard work! Though I am not opposed to the proposal.I still have concern with the absence of a border. Between the County and/or the State cutting the grass, I think grass clippings will overwhelm the mulch.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, I am still waiting for right-of-way information to verify that the WCV sign is not within state right-of-way. If it is determined that the sign is within state right-of-way, I have begun my review to see if it falls within the State Highway Administration's outdoor advertising program.
This information is very important to make sure our hard work does not go to waste. No matter what, I am willing to help and provide any equipment I have as well as donate.
I am not sure where to verify about the right of way. The porperty belongs to the Board Of CCounty Comissioners 129 E MAIN ST RM 101
ReplyDeleteELKTON MD 21921-5924, so I guess it belongs to the County. I don't understand the right-of-way thing.
Would giving them a call answer that question or is there another place online to find out?
Since Fletchwood Rd is a state highway (MD 277), they will own the ROW along this road (the ROW line is usually where the utility poles are located). This is not always the case, but would be good to verify.
ReplyDeleteI am starting the search with the State Highway Administration to find the records (roadway plans) when the development was constructed. After that, I would have to verify the information through the county records.
This should not take too long, so we will be ready by April.
I think it will look nice, depending on the right of way "issue". We should be able to help that weekend. Has anyone looked at other places to see if we can go lower than $200 - $300 per side? Anyone know a landscaper willing to give us a deal?
ReplyDeleteIf it is too costly to do both sides of the entrance, maybe we could use the river rocks on both for the side without a sign until we get more funding to finish. Cristian, where did you get the costs? Vannoy on US 40 has good prices on mulch and stuff. I guess this will be brought up at the next meeting.
ReplyDeleteFor those that don't seem to know, Cris works at a nursery. He's quoting his employer's cost for the plants. You aren't going to get that many plants (good quality) for much less. If you really want to see his talent, check out Cris's property. It's beautiful! Take a walk around the neighborhood and visit Apache Court. We have so many houses in this subdivision, would everyone be willing to kick in $5 toward plants? The bill would be paid and money to spare for more beautification.
ReplyDeleteThanks Doris for the nice comments. In the next meeting on March 2nd we'll discuss dues. Most of the captains decided to pay their $20 this coming meeting. The rest we decided that we will put fliers advertising the front garden with before and after pictures and celebrating Earth day. Also we thought of walking house to house with pictures and explaining how it affects the value of your home. As a last resort I thought of having a bucket while we are landscaping and ask for donations as people drive by! We are shooting for landscaping the sign side and cleaning up the other... hopefully we'll have enough to landscape both. We’ll be signing up volunteers too.
